Not that I'm any kind of expert on this front, but I've started using Firefox as my browser and it's fast and clean. An article from today's Boston Globe, "Web power to the people," confirms that I'm not the only one changing my access road to the Web.

Yup FireFox ROCKS ..Big Time !!!
For those who don't know, there is Candidate1 out there
Ijust downloaded a portable version of FFv1 for a nerd stick. Imported all my Links, cookies and the works etc.. and actually running this posting of my USB drive. Well, now I can shove my nerd stick into any computer and still have a comfort zone. This means all read/write op's (yead read as Personal info !!) is done to my nerdstick.. no sticky trail on the PC now and lose of data !!
What do you think eh ?? An't that great !!!

Tabbed browsing is fantastic...
I have used the browser for more than 6 months...I can't think of how I ever used IE in my life.

I'm sure the people at www.spreadfirefox.com would love to hear this. They are trying to run the whole Firefox browser push in a more "don't try preaching to the masses". The more people who are perceived as "normal" people using Firefox, the better.
Firefox is really putting browsing back into the market. It's saying "here's a choice". On so many fronts, for me, it completely crushes Internet Explorer. There's plenty of articles with the dozens of reasons to use Firefox, so I won't post them here (will provide if you ask, though).
As a software developer, it even has a whole development architecture called XUL for cross platform development, and the number of useful extensions are growing rapidly (try Weatherfox - a weather forecast sitting in the toolbar).

With testimonials like this I definitely don't understand why they think a six-figure ad in the New York Times is warranted. They think this pricey ad will build more credibility among CIOs and IT executives (they're not getting as much traction in enterprise settings) than unsolicited recommends by business and IT professionals like this.

I am the designer of Spread Firefox and I appreciate your feedback!
The idea behind the NYTimes ad is not in any way to earn the respect of CIOs and IT execs. In fact, the ad is 100% a product of the Firefox community FOR the community. I should know--I'm also doing the art direction for it and I'm only a volunteer! The idea for the ad itself was entirely cooked up by a volunteer!
The thrust of the ad is to say loudly and proudly to the world: HERE WE COME! We've all been let down by a certain monopolistic company that has repeatedly failed to innovate with its flagship product... and so the open-source community came up with their own web browser, one that hands down trumps the incumbant and offers a real choice over what's come before. And finally, we can take back the web!
Hyperbole aside, the ad is not a 6 figure purchase--rather a full page, $50,000 ad. The money came from some corporations but primarily out of the pockets of 10,000 volunteers who rallied family, friends and coworkers to help us raise more than $250,000 in 10 days. I can understand why you'd be skeptical, but helping facilitate this project--and seeing the people from all over the world contribute and offer to put ads in their local papers (from India to Portugal to Brazil) proves to me that Firefox is a completely authentic product!

Thanks Chris for responding and clarifying. I wasn't trying to imply that Firefox isn't authentic. I raved about the "community marketing" strategy back in mid September on my blog.
As to the fact that the ad campaign is not about attracting enterprise attention - I read about that in what I thought was the established press - geez, I guess the blogosphere really can be more trustworthy.

Chris - great job with the NYT ad. I love Firefox and you guys and doing a fantastic job. I still don't understand the purpose of the ad. I think you should post an "ad" on the spreadfirefox website with names of the folks who donated the $$. NYT (commercial) with Firefox (Open system/volunteer work) somehow does not fit well in my mind. Maybe it is just me. I love you guys for creating a great product. I am doing my bit in spreading Firefox. My wife and 2 of my cousins have switched to Firefox!

The USB drive version of Firefox is great...just downloaded and it works very well. Now I can have my own setting & browser with me...no more dealing with IE.

KP: another clue point.. get clusty toolbar or whatever toolbars that you fancy...these new toolbars are the new buzz.. intergrate it to your nerd stick and then watch the fun... over the last 48 hrs.. I am seeings eyeballs pop out of the head syndrome !!

Been using FF ever since it was in the preview (Beta)releases. Was earlier using Mozilla based Netscape 6&7. Try Thunderbird - mail client; the extensions - Sunbird calendar project; Spiderzilla - a web spider to download sites for offline browsing; Quicknote; Gmail extensions, Google toolbar....
You are sure to set ROCK THE WORLD. (I guess you already do that!!)
By the way Tim, XUL is not an architecture its XML User Interface Language, it is the scripting thats responsible for FF's cross platform User interface
