"Nobody can prevent you from choosing to be exceptional."—Mark Sanborn, The Fred Factor
Call this Success Tip #37, and NYResolution2005 #1.
Okay?
(Hint: I have tried using this as a Right Breathing Mantra: NOBODY CAN PREVENT ME FROM BEING EXCEPTIONAL. It works wonderfully.*) (*And is still worth repeating at age 62.)
Before blogging became all the rage, Tom was posting book reviews and Observations (essentially early blog posts) to this site. You can find the archives below.

Here's my not so subtle suggestion for a New Years resolution. It is directed at IT porfessionals but is equally relevant to us all.

Heh. "Nobody... exceptional" is one of the best things I've heard you say for a while, Tom.
Ummm.... that's your line, right? (I'm assuming you're not quoting anybody) Do you mind me asking where it first appeared?
I read "Re-imagine" (3 times) earlier this year, and "In Search of Excellence" a while back... but I don't recall reading the line before...

Here's an exercise to evaluate if you really are pursuing an exceptional life:
Write down a list of things that bring you "life." What charges you up? About what are you passionate? What brings you joy?
Now write down a list of things that bring you "death." What situations or tasks bring are painful for you? What do you disdain?
Make a list of how you pursue what brings you life. Make a list of how you avoid death.
Compare the last two lists and you will probably recognize whether you are pursuing life or just avoiding death. This was an eye-opener for me.

Dustin, that thought-provoking exercise was a great gift to start the year. I found myself contemplating another list--the things that drain life energy--or, as you say, that bring you death--and that I actually pursue based on all of those "should" messages re various life roles. I am going to use this start of a new year to shed the shoulds. Thank you!
