Thursday Edition
In a 5 January New York Times op-ed, Nick Kristof reminds us that each month (!!) more people die of AIDS (240,000) and Malaria (165,000) than did in the tsunami. (Another 140K ... PER MONTH ... die of diarrhea.) These deaths are not "spectacular" except to families and loved ones, but are a stain on all our existences.
My (very small) suggestion: With 3 friends (initially) start a monthly lunch-time "study session" on such topics. We must begin by working on ourselves—our own sensibilities & sensitivities.

And not to mention the 50,000+ vehicle accident deaths in the USA each year - drive carefully and defensively.

Less than 3,000 were dead or missing as a result of the September 11 attacks, while the Center for Disease Control states that influenza kills 20,000 to 40,000 Americans each year without fail.
Negligence in hospitals kills more people than most Americans can imagine - the numbers of which could be reduced significantly if a better structure was put in place. Funding for these two problems could go a long way to saving lives.
Americans need to simply "wake up and do something about it" because no government is interested in the 1-to-1 deaths that occur every minute of every day.

the problems are too big, numerous and rapid to deal with casually or sequentially. if you haven't yet, you should see the film "The Corporation." I'd also suggest being honest about what's been going on around here since 1492, if you know what I mean. We've got to start functioning radically differently on a day to day basis and subvert some long held power.
