On the Road Again

Interlaken. Switzerland. Global warming? I don't know ... but no snow here in the Alps. On the other hand, surrounded by the most gorgeous peaks imaginable! Temperature about 35ºF, which doesn't deter the Swiss from gathering at outdoor cafes for a 4pm beer or glass of wine. (Schnapps?) Para-gliders gracefully landing in the park across from my hotel. Altogether, um, Swiss. Serene. An oasis? Gas about 6 bucks a gallon next door ... and yet people continue to cope. If ours were $6 ... we'd doubtless not be fighting in Iraq. (On the other hand we'd be fighting at home!)

"It" begins! On the road again! (I figure tomorrow's speech-seminar will be about #2,601 since I started "this stuff" in 1978.) Happy 2005!

Please try to have someone recover some of the Swiss acounts - USA/UN Arafat $100's of millions - we can use it to pursue Annan and Raines, who may soon be on the run. Maybe donate it to Canada to warm them up this bitter winter for the NHL-less Great White North.

Thanks for putting two things into perspective: Seattle also has gorgeous outdoors and I shouldn't let recent snowfall/cold/rain detract from gettin outside and enjoying it all -- Schnapps, Starbucks, no matter...and for making my next visit to the gas station a little more tolerable -- $2 per gal not bad, I guess ;)

Thanks for letting your Democrat roots show. If we paid $6 per gallon we wouldn't be fighting in Iraq? Michael Moore will be proud of you.

Welcome to Switzerland, and to our petrol prices (which are some of the lowest in Europe). Enjoy Davos, if that is where you are heading (you will probably find that a bit cooler and should get some skiing in. Maybe it is global warming, though this time last year we had wonderful snow.)

For a good summary of Swiss happenings whilst you are here you could try http://www.swissinfo.org/ the international site of Swiss Radio.

Thomas - the expressed left leanings mean fewer votes for you, loss in profits, loss in favorable ratings, possible credibility loss, et. al. The "Dan Rather" metaphor - everyone is selling him short - that's his legacy. The left mistakes ideology for reasoning prowess.

Am I the only one who sees the irony in a comment about global warming and a comment on the price of petrol in Europe in the same entry!

From a business perspective European and far East car makers operate in a much healthier competitive environment because fuel prices force technical innovation (more horsepower for a given engine size). In the long term future (when fuel WILL be priced by it's pollution as well as it's production cost) who will be ready to adjust fastest?

I guess I'm the dumb one here. The simple fact is that if our energy dependence were lower, our interest in the Middle East would not be so consuming. How the hell that can be construed as a "Democrat" comment beats me. I would think any other interpretation would be imbecilic. (Is there anyone who truly thinks we would have gone to war over Kuwait in 1991 if their principal export had been onions instead of oil?) Also, pls read the post: we do indeed love our cars--and I said we'd have Civil War II if we were asked to pay $6 a gal. I fear we're all still so wrapped up in Election2004 that one is unable to say anything without political spin being attributed thereto?????????

Thomas - it is just so much fun to ridicule democrats - especially Northeast ones like Pam in Boston. Inexpensive energy ala oil has been a USA free enterpise ethic forever it seems.

I'm encouraged by the new hybrid vehicle move and would love to live in a walking - biking environment - maybe that is a boomer "back to the future" idea - create new people-friendly places or ELSE.
