Saturday Edition
Robert Scoble, in his opening comments here at the Blog Business Summit in Seattle said that passion and authority are two attributes of blogs that make them compelling.
There's a guy sitting beside me, Mitch Ratcliffe, who is posting detailed notes about the presentations.

Erik. Could you tease something out of Scoble for me? Passion, I understand. But authority? Authenticity, maybe. What does he mean by authority? As far as I can surmise, authority seems to be what's lacking on blogs? Every Tom (including me and Peters), Dick and Harry can post an opinion, whether or not it's grounded in reality.

Tom: I think robert means -"Two things that make a good blog: Passion [how often you post and go to information sources, like trade shows] and authority [knowledge level and clarity]. "

By authority he means really knowing the subject you're writing about. Authority, author. Writing about what you love, therefore know. It's the passion for the thing that drives you to discover more about it. Then you let the rest of the world know what you've learned.

Yeah, authority means that, but it also means tonal authority, or boldness in your passion.
Boldness of believing in something enough to not wait for the results of an opinion poll or focus group.

Thanks pd, Erik and Jason. I'm with ya. And as Alan Watts so wisely wrote (and I'm paraphrasing): An authority is no more than an author of something. And with everyone's desire to be published (to become an authority), the book stores are now filled with books about books about books about books. Will the same thing happen soon with blogs? Blogs about blogs about blogs about blogs.
