Our pal Dan Pink has a superb article ("The Book Stops Here") in the March Wired on Wikipedia. Wikipedia, Linux and other "self-organizing" "enterprises" are the first true breakthroughs in "organization" in hundreds of years—though as Wikipedia has grown, forms of hierarchy have necessarily arisen.
Business 2.0 (Jan-Feb) has a powerful article on the transformation (right word) of 7-ELEVEN ("7-ELEVEN Gets Sophisticated"). Among other things, 7-11 has purposefully re-purposed itself to lure the woman consumer—one of my hobby horses.

It seems like around the Washington, D.C. area it is county code that a 7-11 with Citgo - required every 2 blocks. In northern Virginia sometimes they are within 500 feet of each other.

Wow! Think of what 7-11 has done. They have migrated their identity from the old definition of convenience: time saved to get back to work ...you get what is available in store and the store manager making a profit according to the corporate model TO convenience defined as: let me do your thinking for you so you can free up your mind to think and feel about things far more important in your life [while simulataneously delighting you with every product and service you want every time you walk in the store or drive in for gas] and the store manager making as much profit as her little heart can desire. 7-11 has known that women make up over 50% of the convenience store audience, I worked with them ... it's their approach that's changed, it's their use of technology and it's the integration of their Asian methodology. I think it is fantastic. Good luck to them. Sounds like their suppliers are in for an adjustment ...

It looks like 7-Eleven is paying attention to the little things, which sometimes, turn out to be the big things. (Dashing to an important meeting, coffee spilled on a white silk blouse - voila! 7-Eleven saved the day!) I'll have to check it out.

7-11 has re-imagined itself! Awesome. I remember when they got rid of the porn racks in front of their cash registers. Am I dating myself? Those were the days when you could walk into a convenience store with a lit cigarette, buy a six pack of beer and a porn rag, jump into your pickup and drive off with out your seat belt on, with an open container in the cab and your kids hopping around in the bed of the truck eating candy cigarettes.

7-11 is ok, but Sheetz (sheetz.com) defines WOW with some of their newest stores (Chantilly, VA, Gettysburg, PA.)
