Prep!

I have a new ritual. During the last half hour before a speech I watch a Cirque du Soleil DVD. Today ... "DRALION." My standard (for my speech) is the "CdSstandard" (CdS = Cirque du Soleil.) BBall coach extraordinaire John Wooden said "Make each day a masterpiece." The "CdSstandard" is my version of Mr Wooden's ... Towering Challenge.

Tom Peters posted this on 02/28/05.

Tom, I'm a big fan, but some things should remain in the closet. You are definitely into David Brent territory here!

Coach Wooden: perfect practice makes. Seems like routine that is perfect makes for the perfect routine.

I do something similar. Before I start to write a breakthrough advertisement for clients, I put on an Enya or Moby CD and pull out my swipe file of all the greatest selling ads and peruse through them while contemplating my clients goods and their target market's mindset.

Before long, I'm scribbling away on my yellow legal pad as ideas and inspiration flow.

How do you mean ‘coincidence’?

It was the year 1996. On a Friday night, I watched this fantastic movie A Baroque Odyssey and was absolutely flabbergasted by the most fantastic, graceful appearance I had ever seen. “I hope they will come to Holland one day” I said to my wife, “ we really have to watch this live”.
The next Sunday we planned to go to Amsterdam, to visit a Buddhist exhibition in the Big Church. I had promised my daughters of six and four to go by train, but since it rained we decided to take the car anyway. Arriving at Amsterdam, I drove to the museum square to find a parking place and then, suddenly, there she was: the big white, oval tent of Cirque du Soleil, rising up in the air. We parked the car and went to the ticket shop. It was fifteen minutes before Showtime. As you probably know, it’s rather hard to get tickets for Cirque du Soleil, since many, many people want to visit them. But this day, things were quite different. The lady in the ticket shop smiled and offered me four places front seat: the best seats you can imagine. I hesitated for two seconds. Will the kids like it? ( no lions…) Are they not too young to appreciate it? Of course not! Ten minutes later we were part of a scintillating Saltimbanco show and since that day Raving Fans of Cirque du Soleil. For many months to come, we told people about this perfect day and shared the music and the videotape. Cirque du Soleil was in our lives and was there to stay.
Until today I tell this story in my seminars when we discuss the concept of coincidence and synchronicity. When your mind is tuned in the right direction, things will happen, because change favors the prepared mind. So, when we tune our minds, raving fans of TP, there will be lot of opportunities to re-imagine our world according to the ultimate spirit of creativity and beauty.

I watch the DVD of Manchester United winning the treble in 1999 before I do any big presentation. Its a masterpiece example of having absolute faith in your ability and pulling something world-beating out of the bag!

Check out a metal sculpture I did for Cirque Du Soleil via their online boutique at www.cirquedusoleil.com. Once at their site go to their online boutique, then to collectibles, then to sculptures. My sculpture is the one that retails for $595.00. I worked with Olga Pikhienko who was the lead contortionist and star of Varekai. Mr. Guy Laliberte, Cirque founder, owns #001 of the 2500 piece edition.
