Baltimore (Balmer) Boy ...

I grew up near Baltimore. Was in York, PA, giving a speech recently. Created a new slide. Had the word "water" in it. How did I spell it? No kidding: WARTER. That's the way we Baltimoreans say it. (T.God for spell check, which saved me from mortification. Though I admitted my sin to the audience, and the Yorkies got a short case of hysterics. Me, too.)

Tom Peters posted this on 05/13/05.

I've heard of lots of Baltimoreans say this, although it usually prompted those from outside the area to pronounce Baltimoreans as "Baltimorons." Glad I'm over that, and thanks for sharing your tip of spell check. That also saves many spelling Wisconsin "Wesconsin."

Baltimore is considered as one of the best examples of re-imagining a city. In fact we took it as model for the re-imagination of Bilbao. I would thank you any comment about the rebirth of your city, Tom.

I'm a Dub, as in Dublin, and not a misspelling for Dud!

Felix ... AMEN. My beloved B'more was nothing to write home about 25 years ago. Then, with an amazing public-private partnership (Jim Rouse, Developer; Don Schaffer, Mayor), there was a quick turnaround ... which has been followed up by more enlightened public-private partnership & leadership. Either Time or Newsweek has recently run a cover on "great mayors" (different in Euro and U.S. editions). Governing is tough at the National level, but a Super-cool Mayor can make a Huge Difference!
