Complexities

We've been doing this blog for a year now, and we always think the standard features, like our poll, should be easy for the people who implement them for us. Especially in late 2005. But no, it seems we just don't realize the complexity of what they've built for us.

You might have noticed, if you voted earlier today, that the results that showed up didn't match the poll you voted on. Our apologies if that happened to you. It's fixed now.

Cathy Mosca posted this on 09/02/05.

I thought it was a psychological experiment. I used to give short tests to workgroups with 20 questions or so. In the instructions section at the top of the test I would include in small print towards the end of the instructions, and after standard canned stuff, "do not answer any questions on this test."

Sure enough, I rarely got a test back without all questions neatly answered. It was a lesson in attention to detail. Feel free to use my 'test' with your team ;.)

Technology always has "gotchas" doesn't it? I've learned the hard way over the years that nothing in the web world is as "simple" as it looks - from registering domains to blogging. The simpler it looks to the outside, the more complex it is for the "wizard behind the curtain." As my super tech geeks colleagues continue to explain to me.

Trendy marketing gurus always claim that everything on the web is now easy. As a former techie, please believe me, things can still be pretty tough behind the scenes! (Moral: don't expect everything done yesterday and expect it to work flawlessly!)
