Wednesday Edition
Tom's speaking to HR folks in Dubai at The Middle East HR Summit, 18 Sept 2005. He's long called HR the "Rock Stars of the Age of Talent," so he was inspired to re-write a Special Presentation from awhile back, The Talent50. And, of course, we make these slides sets available to you:
Dubai here and Talent50 here.
And another Dubai event: Master Foods, here.
Before blogging became all the rage, Tom was posting book reviews and Observations (essentially early blog posts) to this site. You can find the archives below.

Thanks Cathy for some more wonderful slides. Oh how I wish Tom's mantra was true of the HR folks I knew in the National Health Service in the UK. I would refer to most of them as "Protectors of the Past" rather than "Rock Stars of the Age of Talent." HR should be everything Tom says it should be. My feeling is we have a long way to go over here to see the days when 'groupies' are following our HR folks :-)

"Are customers' bottom lines really benefiting from what we provide them?"
I love the powerful questions that are rarely asked. For those providers of a valued service those in the field of HR, whether in large corporations or solo professional consultants, the provision of value and success should always be key drivers. And mostly they are but not always from the customers perspective. It is not a new phenomenon that customers buy and continue to buy through an emotional connection to their partners in business - suppliers, alliances or employees. Engage the passions, aspirations and dreams of those you "do business" with and you will increase your survival as an HR Professional/Talent Enthusiast/Customer Champion.
I commit to being a "weird game changer" that relishes the belly flops so that the swan dives are ever more successful and plentiful. or to quote Andrea Lee Make your business BOP Bold Outrageous and Provocative. Of course if you haven't been through the dubai slides, you'll think I'm weird anyway!

Another great set of slides.
Just a quick 'correction'. Peter Job, who the slides twice quote retired from being CEO of Retuers in 2001 (slides indicate that he is the current CEO). Since leaving his successor has tried to build market share through acquisition - with predictable results.
