So What ...

I like to begin my seminars (today's goes from 9 am to 6 pm) with a statement of purpose—"What do I aim to do with nine precious hours of your life?" To help me answer my own question I wrote a short piece titled "What have you done this year?" You'll find it here.

Tom Peters posted this on 10/05/05.

this pdf file of yours ranks right up there with the "tapes" of your seminar ((really))) (which I listend to in my beat-up chev celebrity fresh out of college ((1990)) (well I had a few credit hours to go) ... ready to rock the world....

the pdf file does not say much but when you read between the lines it says all you need to know (well at least today) and the mantra which my drum beats to ....

I wish you could only know how much of that is right on the button in the "entrechanging" world I do business in (as I sit here and chat with my coworkers via IM 14 hours away from me on the other side of the globe)... my father n law thinks I am nuts most of the time (e and y) type.

more to come..... bub-bye now

Tom - DAMN. I'm actually vibrating. Resonance? Low blood sugar? Who knows! I wonder if we all carry those same photos?!!!!!!

Give me something good when I give you the precious hours of my life. I'm sick of what is so boring... the same old seminars, the same old school teaching, the same methods and lazy answers to problems. Give me someone who has thought outside the box. Give me a new way of thinking. Change my life. Change my thinking. Otherwise, I will leave because you will become irrelevant. I will make a difference. Will you help me do it? - This is the quest of my generation. Thanks for helping me get there.

Brad- your posting earned my attention- it was great food-for-thought.
Tom- For me, it was a year to leap-- a leap year so to speak--with a great jumpstart at your Summit. Your push to excel fuels our own- keep pushing forward and moving ahead.

Majestic Tom! What a fabulous piece to read at 7 a.m.!! - I am now wide awake after reading that!!I look forward to your written 'photos' when you are 90 years of age. We have a long way to go in England - our business culture is much more conservative but then we have our 'freaks and weirdos' too - Sir Richard Branson - a real freak in some peoples eyes over here but to me Branson is wonderfully ORDINARY. He says it as it really is. Tom is another one who does that. NOTHING about all this is complicated - it is SIMPLICITY but then I would say that wouldn't I? :) Thanks Tom for waking me up today!!!!

Trevor - do you ever say anything against TP, looks unhealthy to me!

Posted by bb at October 6, 2005 4:08 AM

BB - What is wrong with agreeing with someone most of the time? I actually find it very healthy. Of course there are occasions when what Tom says may not be one hundred per cent my opinion but most of the time yes I do agree with his views. What is the problem with that? Maybe if there was more agreement in the world generally people would not be killing each other and blowing each other up. But of course I see things too simplistically (not).

Posted by Trevor Gay at October 6, 2005 5:08 AM

The two "pictures" are fantastic... gut-punching intuitive. I carry these same (slightly modified) pictures with me to my classrooms. Of course, your picture one describes most "education" (worldwide).

You inspire me to carry the same passion... the same madness, the same fearlessness into the classroom as you bring to your speeches.

Thanks for the inspiration (though yours is a somewhat intimidating standard to reach for)!

TG I was agreeing with him.... read my post again... TP is like one of the only guys out there that goes against the wind and grain and to me has a clue. I have all the books, tapes and even do this rss feed right into my google.

Heck, I am kind of glad more people do not agree with Peters or think he "is a bit on the edge of business thought" (good or bad). It enables me slip stream through the salmon out there much easier. Heard mentality will get you trampled int this business climate (especially if you are a little guy).

Posted by Bert Blevins at October 6, 2005 8:05 AM

I think we are violently agreeing Bert :-) I am self employed - a little guy - and I think Tom has it perfectly right. I too meet many who disagree with him. I support Tom's views because they are simple, honest, direct, and pragmatic and he never uses complex language. I love it!I am a pragmatist Bert – I have said many times I unashamedly pinch Tom's ideas and use them – that to me is pragmatism and common sense. I cannot understand your point about 'unhealthy' – maybe that is because I see things too simplistically - keep smiling

Posted by Trevor Gay at October 6, 2005 9:42 AM

that was bb (noted above) 'unhealthy' was not me Bert Blevins it must have been a random enemy combatant blog destroyer post

Posted by Bert Blevins at October 6, 2005 10:39 AM

Thanks Bert - Oh well - such is life. BB will remain forever a mystery. In short I agree with TP and am proud of it!

"Energizer bunnyville" - TP & site extraordinaire - health wealth and happiness resonate here! I too agree with the invention and evolution of TP as wild-eyed Chief Soul Shaker [CSS] ...

Just when I needed a reminder on why I committed to having two presentations and one proposal done by morning (ahh...the wonders of caffeine and the amazement of still pulling all nighters) along comes this riff. Wonderful. I hope we leave a legacy of living that purpose here at tpc!

Trevor & bb,
Tend to find myself in the same position as Trevor. I tend to agree way more than I disagree. The one thing I can say with certainty... ever since 'In Search of Excellence' Tom has had my attention. He's the one person who I can honestly say challenges me to THINK every time I see him, or read something that he's written.

Posted by lem at October 7, 2005 5:31 AM

lem..good context..there is agreeing `way more` then there is agreeing adoringly trevor more..in fact even TP disagrees with himself..

Posted by bb at October 7, 2005 6:31 AM

Great stuff Tom! You are an inspiration, the Web 3.0 in a Web 2.0 world. I think it was General Shipman that said, "Don't let the bastards grind you down!"

Have a great weekend!

Thank Lem and thanks again bb. Good to know that people - including me - do not agree with everyone all the time. It seems I have said or done something to upset you bb. Sorry if it is the case. I simply agree with almost all of what TP says. If that is 'adoringly' then so be it. I assure you I do not agree with everyone and those who propound different views to me get my argued and considered response in a civil well mannered and constructive way. The folks I work with will testify to that. Differing views and opinions should be welcomed, nurtured and encouraged as long as they are civil and legal. I am all for that and I still cannot see what is wrong with agreeing with most of what someone else says. Sorry once more if my language upsets you bb.

I've often found myself wondering at my own reactions to some of Tom's observations. I don't always agree with Tom but find myself agreeing WAY more than not. I wouldn't characterize myself as a Tom Peters groupie but I must admit that I am addicted to the emotions and passions that Tom's observations elicit from me. I want a life that matters, I hate mediocrity, and I love people that actually LIVE and give a shit about the world. In that, I think perhaps I have found a kindred spirit in Tom and those that his message attracts.

I don't want to be Tom but I sure as hell want to live where he does - a world that excites and challenges me on every level.

"What have you done this year?" is a TERRIFIC question! A few years ago I began a practice of keeping a running list of things I had accomplished during the year that I was proud of—and reviewing the list regularly. A little too narcissistic, you're thinking? Well in the normal course of events I'm usually WAY too focused on what I HAVEN'T accomplished. (Why? The O in my last name provides a clue.) I highly recommend this practice.

Along the way, I've picked up a perspective that can cause me to jolt out of bed each morning. Each day I awaken to the possibility that around the next corner could be a burning bush. With that wide-eyed anticipation, I find that every day is like Christmas eve and each night I lay down knowing that I LIVED that day.

Earth's crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God; But only he who sees, takes off his shoes - The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.
