Thursday Edition
For those of us in the Far North (Vermont) there are a series of Signs of "Spring." Earliest, and my wife's favorite, is the Winter Solstice ... the day after which the days start getting longer. Next, Groundhog Day, Feb 2. For baseball nuts, it's the day the Batteries (pitchers & catchers) report to Spring Training, in mid-February. For Vermonters there's First Day of Sugaring (sap starts running, for maple syrup). The Guarantee one has survived the Winter is Opening Day (baseball), around
April 1.
Personally, I can't go as far as Susan, honoring the Winter Solstice as the Indicative Turning Point. However, I've got a new Marker which I just read about in a push email from the San Francisco Giants. Next Tuesday, February 10, Spring Training tickets go on sale! Halleluiah! Spring is here, or at any rate only 4 days away!
Before blogging became all the rage, Tom was posting book reviews and Observations (essentially early blog posts) to this site. You can find the archives below.

Though the weather is still cold, once the daytime starts to increase it is good news for me.

Tom, we know you've been busy and have been working on being more efficient. But have you actually found a way to travel time? Did you really mean that February 10 is four days away? Or are the Giants practicing in Japan or something?

Your cool friend, Steve Shapiro, is really on to something. The interview made me decide I am going to buy the book. Happy New Year and keep doing what you're doing Tom.

"Pitchers and Catchers Report in 38 Days": as we enter the winter sports doldrums, Yankee Stadium daily counts down to this epochal mid-winter solstice, its only sign, viewable from the Major Deegan Expressway, giving all hope of warm breezes even under the grey skies of the Bronx...

When I lived in Arizona, there was this one tree that would start budding leaves (consistently) in very early January. That was my first indicator that it was spring. Of course, from a baseball perspective, the fact that the Arizona State baseball team started playing games in the fourth week of January was another solid indicator that spring was on its way (even if sitting in the stands could be a little cold).
Of course, now I live in SE Asia, where every day of the year is "summer" (ave. 90F).
Winter? What's that? ;)
