For a forthcoming event, I was asked to provide some possible "sayings" on leadership, six words or less, fit to go on coffee cups distributed as gifts. Well, I got a little carried away. (That's not news.) The results are listed below.
"Passion!"
"Energy!"
"Enthusiasm!"
"Passion! Energy! Enthusiasm!"
"Enthusiasm! Enthusiasm! Enthusiasm!"
"Enthusiasm Moves Mountains!"
"Nothing Matches Enthusiasm as a 'Motivator'!"
"Enthusiasm, the Ultimate Virus."
"Technicolor Times Demand Technicolor Actions."
"Technicolor Times Demand Technicolor People."
"Wow. Now."
"Re-imagine!"
"Re-imagine! Re-do! Re-vise! Re-vo-lu-tion!"
"Respect!"
"Leaders 'Do' People. Period."
"Credibility. Asset No.1."
"Tell the Truth."
"Truth Wins."
"Challenge. Challenge. Challenge."
"Two Big Goals. Tops."
"Focus. Your Calendar Never Lies."
"Good Story. Good Leader."
"Best Story Wins."
"Live the Story."
"Change the World. Accept Nothing Less."
"Dream!"
"Dream. The Only Worthwhile Reality."
"Beware Those Who Agree With You."
"Seek Dissidents. Nurture Dissidents. Cherish Dissidents."
"Excellence!"
"Demand Excellence!"
"Demand Excellence. The Greatest Gift."
"No Less Than Excellence. Ever."
"Excellence, Life's Gold Standard"
"Stop Talking! Start Doing!"
"Execute. Execute. Execute."
"Do. Do. Do."
"'Good Execution' Beats 'Good Strategy.'"
"Agility Trumps Size."
"Women make the best bosses!"
"Women Rule. Believe It."
"You must care!"
"Listen."
"Ask. 'Why?'"
"'Different' beats 'Better.'"
"'Distinct' or 'Extinct.'"
"Innovate or Die."
"'Me Too' = 'Me Dead.'"
"Talent Time!"
"Best Talent Wins."
"Moderation Fails in Immoderate Times."
If you were given the same assignment, what other pithy, world-changing, cup-suitable pearls would you suggest?
(A PDF version and a PPT version are attached.)

I love "Innovate or Die." I can just imagine sitting at my next meeting with that mug next to me!
My own saying would be Diversity = Excellence.

Make It So.
Patrick Stewart as Star Trek's Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Always delivered after LISTENING as an empowerment rather than an order. Seems to me the ESSENCE of leadership.

"You are your own caffeine!!!"
Posted by Francisco Fernández at February 13, 2006 12:16 PM
Back in 2001, I had coffee cups designed for a new team of software localizers in the west of Ireland. I went to a local lad, affectionately known as Fast Eddie. The theme was Excellence!, with our logo above the word. (note: this was before I had the fortune of knowing about Tom Peters!)
Days later, Fast Eddie was proud as he pulled one of the mugs out of the box before I took them away:
"image of logo"
Exellence!
"uhh, Eddie, isn't there a 'c' in 'exellence'?" I felt more embarrased for him than upset for myself, and had a great laugh that day!
Anyway, here are my contributions:
People Power!
Embrace the Moment!
Fearless!
Make Mistakes!
Communicate!
Be True!
Transparency!
I Dare You!
Act Local!
What's Your Customer's Name?
Listen!
Be Compassionate!
Be Real!
Have Fun!
Be Constructive!
It's Possible!
I'm Wrong Sometimes! That's OK.
Don't Watch the Clock!
Invest in Yourself!
Don't Forget Your Family!
Balance Life.
It is Personal!

Hi
I kind of agree with the slogans and the comments but feel they are "value free". By that I mean that it appears that it is great to be great at being an arms supplier or a oil giant that ignores global warming - or to be a brilliant a PR company that tries to persuade people that corporate misdoings are OK really - it was just a bit mis-understood.
The world is in quite a state and it is important at least to me that we do good things well - so how about -
Above all do no harm (Hippocratic Oath for doctors- recently popular in the US!)
Listen to the nice guys - not the thugs
Leave a legacy of goodness
People before profit
"American Civil War after trade talks collapse" (Asian World Times 2035 AD)
Be green not mean
The poor in Africa are the real measure of our greatness as a civilzation.
The money-maddened simpletons - I kill them again and again - Upanishads
What does it benefit a man if he gain the whole world but loses his soul?
Cheers
Mike

I think mine would be:
1. Make your own luck!
2. Yesterday's Gone. Think forward.
3. Drink coffee. Then think.
4. There's always an Archillion battlecruiser or an intergalactic plague (taken from Men in Black)
5. Dream. Believe. Work. Achieve. Repeat.
6. Ideas, like coffee, are good when hot.

For the coffee cup message entry, I nominate my favorite Asian proverb:
"Even the gods cannot help those who lose opportunities."

This is a close rephrasing of a version found in the Guy A. Zona (1997) collection of Chinese proverbs,
If You Have Two Loaves of Bread, Sell One and Buy a Lily. NY: Touchstone, p. 29.

"Make fast mistakes"

Great list Tom.
My additions:
-Got an idea? Pull the trigger.
-Nothing beats activity.
-Coffee is for closers. (sorry, couldn't resist)
-Not sure? Ask your kids.
-Go against the grain.
-Be original. Re-invent the rules.
Lastly:
-No ideas? Pour another cup.

On reading the laundry list of core values, maxims and so forth, Well that's the problem, there are too many good ideas to list at once. As novelty value will wear thin fast, how about printing a black rectangle on the mug, so you can write your own value adding objectives on the side. Make each mug different, or have the design of the mug reflect common values, e.g. a mug that changes colour with heat (revealing a word) could symbolize innovation, an upside down cup handle 'think different' etc... Playful invention + Personal meaning vs uninspired top-down shoehorning!!! message + medium wins the day.
