Sigh!! I hope to someday see, feel, and taste Rome. Tom, you really "frame" pictures well.

I was fortunate enough to visit Rome rather frequently when living in Naples, Italy for 3 years. There is a lot of passion in Vatican City, which is a sovereign state within the city of Rome (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vatican_City).
The most passionate act that I witnessed there occurred during my first visit while attending Midnight Mass during Christmas 1996. I was passionately elbowed out of line by a flock of nuns who were fighting to get into the standing-room-only basilica! No kidding, I had bruises!

Tom O - I fondly recall days being taught by a flock of nuns - I know what you mean. And I was at the Vatican in '00 - Pope avoided me for some reason ... the best Roman art I've seen though is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.

Sean, love the MET, but nothing quite compares to strolling down some of the older cobbled streets in Roma to really get a feel for Roman art in proper perspective. Florence will also blow your mind away, where the buildings themselves are adorned with some of the greats' work - art al fresco, as part of the urban landscape rather than hidden within climate-controlled corridors. Oh, perhaps I'll revisit Italy before heading stateside next month - if only for the tortellini con panna e proscutti! Yummy!

Rome is a wonderful city! Although, there has been a lot of friction about the signs(BMW Z4) hanging on the buildings. I'm not sure how it's been of late, but many buildings had scaffolding around them for years with the intention of being repaired, but instead they were not being repaired, but just wanted to sell advertising space on the scaffolding. Maybe things will change now with Romano Prodi.
