Friday Edition
Union Square. San Francisco. Borders. Walk past a biz book titled Sarbanes-Oxley for Dummies. Buy it. Skim it. Learn an enormous amount.
Hooray for the DUMMIES series. Uneven or not, it provides a great service. Sure, I could have "made my own" on the Web. But this served its purpose: Written in plain English. Well organized. Highlights laid out for ... Dummies. Main points digestible in a couple of hours. A decent reference work—a starter's kit as it were.
Am I now a Sarbox/SOX/Sarbanes-Oxley expert? Of course not, but my overall comprehension level has soared.
Good job.

I like the Dummies series too. Just purchased 'The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Bible' - Third Edition - well worth a 'scan' read to put some modern context to the great old book.

We think in pictures and this picture, of Tom reading a Dummies book, is worth at least a thousand words.

What I liked about their technical IT books (UNIX for dummies etc which saved my butt on a couple of customer visits) was that they also included warnings about possible things that could go wrong with the command as well as how to use it.
I still havn't found a copy of Rocket Science for Dummies though.......

Hi Pam!

Dummies and Idiots - syntax people syntax - prefer "genius" and intelligent and astute and thinking ... "Sarbox for Mensa" ...
Then again set the sales bar low and then overdeliver?

I have 'Golf for dummies'.
It does NOT make the putts drop, and I still slice.
It WAS however a good read and a quite decent instruction-book without the snobbery of many similar golf books.
Yes, the idea is brilliant.

Sean, I'm in Botswana ... and am no expert. So I am trying something excruciatingly difficult---to dramatically simplify my language-concepts. I get so hung up on co-appearing with Clay Christensen, Renee Mauborgne, etc--and trying to act-sound clever by complicating things; I often up missing the point (and a golden opportunity for impact) in pursuit of self-indulgent "sophisticated" mental amusement.

After purchasing Macs For Dummies last year, I didn't have any hesitation about buying the somewhat unfortunately named Strokes for Dummies earlier this year.
It's an excellent read and whilst it's US orientated, this stroke sufferer from across the pond has found it very, very useful indeed as a means of understanding the nature and effects of what happened to him back in November 2004...
I've been back on my feet and managing a store for a while now (and started climbing again...), but since reading this book, I've understood my limitations a bit more and worked out how to push the boundaries just that little bit more.

Anything on 'Consulting for Dummies'? - You think dummies need a management consultant...kinda borrow the watch and tell the time?

Sarbanes-Oxley and "Dummies"...now there's a match made in heaven. Maybe they'll help us all understand the worst legislation ever imposed on American business. Talk about killing innovation!

Dee, don't disagree about the SarbOx dampening effect--but shouldn't a little of the blame be diverted from Washington to Skilling, Lay, Ebbers, the Rigases et al???

If it can be transcribed into a $ 15 book, why is corporate America spending almost 15% of its IT budget on compliance and why do we risk the tab being $ 1 billion for each of 164 words in section 404 of SarBox

Tom, it is the worst form of stereotyping. For Lay, Ebbers we are making the public suspicious of Immelt, Mcnealy, and every other CEO and spending all this money to feel good about it...when you ask for payback on the investment you get answers like below
