Sunday Edition

The excuse for our family vacation was Max and Ben's participation in SSWC06, the Single Speed World Championship bike race—in Stockholm this year. Max took a brilliant 10th among 200+ participants, including some pros. Ben, in his first race of this sort, netted a top-half finish among the group who actually finished the grueling course. Above are the two stalwarts minutes before the start.

Tom,
Looks like a lot of fun. I visited the SSWC06 website and would love to hear more about 1.) the "beer, fun, trails, beer, drunken revelry, rides, beer..." and 2.) the tattoos.
Are members of the Peter's clan sporting new body art? :)
Best,
Dave

Congratulations to both the boys. What a great achievement. And I love the colors. Talk about living life out loud!

Dave, long answered required. In short: They compete like madmen/madwomen, and some sponsorships are at stake--but they also have a helluva lot of fun and don't take themselves too seriously while taking themselves seriously.
(Did you check out the link at SSWC06 to one guy's pictures?)
(The key discriminating element in the race, other than the single speed, is what the boys call "technical riding"--riding over through piles of boulders, etc, etc. The course is laid out in total secrecy by the organizers, and participants have no clue as to where they are going until the race starts.)

'participants have no clue as to where they are going until the race starts'...
Just like another day in business. ;-)

Tom - in a concession to reaching 55, I took on the goal of completing a triathlon. I have done two so far, and more scheduled. The last one, my wife joined me. She beat me by six minutes. Here is the kicker...she beat me in the biking, usually my strongest. I had purchased us both technologically marvelous bicycles with all the best components to glide down the road. 16 different gear choices! I asked her if she was used to shifting gears..and she replied "oh, I never changed gears!!!!" So she is the tri champ of the house and the single speed tri champ!
