I visited Pompeii about ten years ago - it's a place that moved me and has always stuck in my mind. I have a long standing interest in history but seeing the figures from the Pompeii digs (like the one on the table in the picture - actually created by pouring plaster into the void created by the body that as long since vanished) really brings the human aspect to life. There is one cast of a woman clutching a baby which is especially moving.
Along side the tragedy are the little things that show that some things don’t change that much – “CAVE CANEM†signs at the entrance of houses (translated - beware of the dog!)
A remarkable place.
