Wednesday Edition
Though he has not been blogging for a month while he is on a break, Tom got an event into his schedule while traveling. Yesterday he spoke to Flexirent, a rental company that "gives you the flexibility to keep pace with technology." Tom focused on two subjects: leadership and talent.
If you were there, let us know your reaction in the comments under this blog entry. If you would like to get the slides presentations, you can use these links:

Before blogging became all the rage, Tom was posting book reviews and Observations (essentially early blog posts) to this site. You can find the archives below.

Hi Tom,
I thought your session was great!
Your comment on Thank You notes struck home, so today i decided to write a note in my diary next to each event that i encountered that deservered a thank you note. For example, formal meetings with people, informal meetings, phone calls, emails etc.
I seriously thought i wouldnt get more than about 2 or 3 Thank You notes on my list to write at the end of the day. I have just completed writing my 9th Thank You note!
I guess you could almost call this blog my 10th!
thanks again, Ben

Ben,
Thank you for coming here to give all our readers the benfit of what you learned by seeing Tom speak. I suspect that the majority of our readers have not had the opportunity, though I can't be sure.
I heard a story recently about thank you notes. The nephew of a friend of mine, recently out of school, asked his employer why he had been the one--out of two hundred applicants--who got the job he'd just been hired for. One of the reasons was that he was the only one who'd sent a thank you note saying he appreciated the chance to interview with them. I guess the story is not that amazing, but what surprised me was that he was the ONLY one. I thought everybody knew that sending thank you notes in that situation is a way to stand out. It is a tip from the book "What Color Is Your Parachute?," and I thought everybody in the world had read it at some point. Back to my friend's nephew ... his grandmother is very very proud.
