Friday Edition

We started the blog before Tom joined in, so there are entries prior to four years ago today, but today is the day we consider our birthday. The official start of Tom's blogging is 28 July 2004, and today marks four years of blog posts! We'd like to thank all our readers for staying with us and contributing to the success of this blog.

Happy Birthday! Congratulations and much appreciation to TP, erik hansen, Cathy Mosca and crew! This blog serves as a wonderful learning and sharpening tool, and as a means of communication and expression across an array of cultural, national and international divides. It's been fun! Thank you.

Besides the Bible, TomPeters.com is what I have read regularly -- nearly every day in the last few years. And the blog has been a blessing, too!
Thank you Tom, Thank you Team.
Happy Birthday!

Oh no...that means I am four years older too??? Thanks Cathy and Erik (and somewhere out there Vince Renstrom) for all your work to make these four years possible...

If we're giving credit (thanks) (and Mike, thanks for mentioning Vince, we miss his voice), we can't forget Geoff Thatcher, who overnight got us set up with blogging software when we first came up with the idea. We hope you're doing well in your new endeavors, Geoff!

Happy Blogbirthday! Picking up and developing a comment in another thread, how about we have a physical get together next year when the blog hits The Big 5? From what I can see in the photos, Tom's got a decent sized garden and as long as Trevor Gay promises a) not to talk about Manchester United; b) not to wear a Manchester United shirt; and c) not to play with the matches, it would be a good occasion for BBQ. Maybe John O'Leary can reform one of his old bands to provide some musical accompaniment?

Happy Birthday everyone. Not only is TP.com a good destination to visit, to snatch some inspiration in a busy day, make a contribution or share a story it's been good too to 'meet' Trevor, Judith et al.
Good idea about turning a virtual get together into a real get together some time.

Happy Birthday!
It really is a pleasure coming to the site.
btw - oddly enough, it is my birthday today too! (Not my fourth, though!)

Congrats to all the team at TP Blog - Cathy, Erik et al. Great idea about the 5th birthday party Mark and I promise I won't mention Manchester United ... for the first 10 minutes at least ... but as for not wearing a Man United shirt - some things are just not worth giving up ... TP Blog has become a second home for many of us - long may it continue ... Happy birthday Martin!
Posted by Trevor Gay at July 28, 2008 11:39 AM
I was most remiss not to mention the others who contribute to this blog with their comments. I too have learned from you. Thanks, Ian, for the reminder. Thanks et al. It's been real..live...rollicking...fun...
Happy Birthday, Martin!

Good idea for the 5th BD party. I'll gladly bring the bourbon and a few bottles of northern Michigan red. Trevor can wear his MU shirt if I can wear my Detroit Red Wings jersey. Have to limit the number of songs by The Eagles on the CD player, though!
Posted by mike at July 28, 2008 2:13 PM
Mike - maybe the party theme should be 'wear your team shirt' I will bring plenty of Eagles music have no fear ...
As Mark suggests John O'Leary can provide the live music and I 'Imagine' he does a wicked Lennon impression eh John? :-)

'Business Continuity' is the key here as it is in most business processes...
It is impeccably handled by Erik and Cathy - well done to both of you...
Tom Peters provides the core of the business with his quirky thought processes... This is smoothed out by TPC members when master Tom is absent - well done to all....
Somehow tompeters! provides a virtual platform for loyal participants (in the comments segment) to provide their 'magic'... The 'magic' I refer to comes from the dedicated and relentless efforts of the likes of Trevor Gay and Judith Ellis... Without their continuity of effort this site would not work nearly as well as it does.
Virtual business networks are not easy things to built or to maintain... They are both fragile and robust (soft and hard) - thus they need just the right amounts of tender love and care...
Happy Birthday to you all at this blog - you have made a silk purse out of a pig's ear....

Congrats. You've been inspiring me for several years -- enough to finally create my own thought- leadership blog. Keep the ideas flowing -- always great content. Happy Birthday Tom & Friends.

Happy Birthday to the entire cast & crew of TP Blog!!!
Since TP Blog has just turned 4, I thought it would be appropriate for me to reflect on 4 things that have impacted me through my limited interaction with this wonderful blog over 3+ years:
1/ Lifelong friendship – I had the good fortune of meeting Trevor Gay, Dave Wheeler and a few other good friends (known thro Trevor) through this blog and my interaction with them has been terrific, to date. Thank you TP!
2/ Lifelong learnings – TP slides, Re-imagine, Collection of Rants and a host of other invaluable material (most of em’ free!) has contributed positively to both my personal & professional development. Thank you TP!
3/ Passion for Excellence – The very word “Excellence” (that is synonymous with Tom Peters) has been re-defined and re-imagined by TP from a whole new dimension / perspective which, has constantly been discussed, debated, hammered and invoked through this wonderful blog to one & all. Indeed it’s no small achievement. Thank you TP!
4/ Authenticity – This blog (including its newswire & other informative material) has been incredibly authentic – be it a discussion, dialogue, post, deliberation, argument, moderation, resolving dispute or whatever for which I wish to personally express my sincere gratitude to TP & his wonderful team. Thank you TP!
Enjoy the celebrations & wishing you happier days ahead.

Richard - thanks mate - and still, after all these years, we Poms can't get even a sniff of the coat tails of you Aussies on the cricket field! Sriram - the feeling is mutual - keep up the great work my friend - you will go far.

Well, that's exactly the grand parade of gush that's to be entirely-cynically expected.
And, rather than add to it, my 'c'mon now, back to work' poser is this: Are we (individually, collectively, whatever) better (or, 'god no' - worse) for the 10000-or-so? pieces (and gazillion comments) herein?
'Place full of passions, opinions, rich culture, debates and, zealotry' sure... and what's the 'key deliverable' for the guy at the back who's just wandered in, having perhaps found a battered copy of "Chaos' in a yard sale, and is genuinely wondering about 'unstructured business activity'? To exactly what is he latching onto, taking home to tell the wife and kids about, debate on a barstool... or perhaps even, incorporate into his own damn stuff?
What does this place add to the world? How does it make it better? Or is it, in now-I'm-here-then-gone-then-here-again Lipscombe's words, just a chattering whatever?
On an entirely different note, who's left from the old farts that posted prior to this being a weblog? (I know Mr Gay is - and isn't it time someone erected a statue of him in Peters Plaza?)

"Are we (individually, collectively, whatever) better (or, 'god no' - worse) for the 10000-or-so? pieces (and gazillion comments) herein?"
Good question. My answer: emphatically yes.
I'll ignore the old canard about whether you're worse off for reading this blog - after all, how do you account for what you might have done with the time and thought instead? I don't agree with everything Tom or his colleagues have posted. I don't agree with all the comments. I do appreciate that a great deal of it has made me think and has shaped and influenced my views. I'm pretty sure it's helped me to become a better leader, I know for sure that I've enjoyed reading and contributing and I can show you examples of my own work where I've used ideas and quotes.
"...grand parade of gush..." or grateful acknowledgement for a forum to develop opinions and ideas? Well, imho, it's like life itself: it's what you choose to make of it.

I am afraid I am also a FOFF.
I can be more specific about what I have gained from this board. Actually as much from Steve Y as TP - much more awareness about how branding can be done and how this is moving away from brute force approach.
Also some of the powerpoints that TP puts out, specifically on Women and the future of their strengths have been a real motivation to women I have managed.
I do agree that you have to manage your time and be selective on boards.
As a cynic I am not great on the "gush" myself but I have learned that sometimes a little cheering does help reduce friction in the world

Many thanks to Tom and Crew for the inspiration to be our very best. I have benefited so much from your collective wisdom and appreciate the "kick in the pants" attitude that Tom and his organization preaches. We are all challenged to be our best and to not settle for what is happening to us. Many, many thanks.

It's been 4 years ALREADY?? (I've got to stop using this 584-day Mayan calendar.) Mark & Trevor, thanks for suggesting some musical entertainment for a 5-year reunion. If there are any members of my old back-up band from the 1970s (The Soluble Fish) that are still alive I'd be glad to gather them up. Hey, it's been a fun 4 years (or 2.5 years by my calendar). Thanks to everyone for playing.
