Sunday Edition
Today is our favorite holiday here at tompeters.com. International Talk Like a Pirate Day. So, dig out your Pirate Dictionary, shine up your sword, and add an earring to your outfit. We hope you enjoy the day!
Sorry, the title of this post is all the pirate talk you'll get from me, but the comments are fair game.

Seems appropriate that the 'Pirate' post sits directly above the 'All else on hold' post considering what a certain number of Pirates have done on Wall Street recently. The heads of fannie, freddie, Lehman and AIG should all be on the plank right about now....

Shiver me timbers! Methinks a greedy crew of pirates have carried off the loot and left us with empty treasure chests and sinking ships. Is there a sub-prime crisis at the Tortuga Club on the Cayman Islands?

Avast,me proud beauty. What better time to talk like a pirate as we watch the bilge rats of Wall Street that have scuttled their ships be reduced to begging for the taxpayer to finance their grog. Arrr. I'd like to see the Jolly Roger flying over Wall Street. Arrr.

OK, killjoy from England here. It always amazes me each year that Talk Like a Pirate day claims that millions of people take part (even dividing by ten for Net hyperbole, if you look around the Net for how many mentions of 'Talk Like A Pirate Day' there are, it probably does run into the millions), yet The Hunger Site, run by the Greater Good, on which you can click to feed hungry people at no cost to yourself, gets a steady state 150,000 clicks or so a day. What interests me here is viral behavior - things that do take off into the millions, and things that just hover at some midpoint and fail to change the world in the way they might have done if the rule of large numbers had taken hold. Just to end that musing and to be a TOTAL killjoy...Pirates didn't really talk like that - the 'arrrhhh' and the 'matey' and all that Pirates of the Caribbean jargon. When Robert Newton had to play Long John Silver in the movie Treasure Island, he didn't know what accent to use. So he chose an extreme west of England accent and exaggerated it even further. Every actor playing a pirate ever since has just copied Newton. So, in the popular mind, that's what pirates talked like.
