Amsterdam canal view

The Hotel Pulitzer here in Amsterdam has a fabulous location (in the exact middle of things), etc., etc. But on my Short List of Lustworthy Attributes it scores a Perfect Ten on three, whereas even the best of the best are often awful on All Three!!

(1) Windows that can be flung Waaaaaaay Open!
(2) A Veeeeeeery Bright bedside lamp.
(3) WiFi that actually is easy to connect to and, so far, has a great signal that isn't interrupted. (I CANNOT TELL YOU—IN 2009—HOW MANY HOTELS HAVE WIFI THAT CAN ONLY BE GRADED "SUCKS STUPENDOUSLY.")

Give me those three, a clean duvet and toilet and shower, and I'm a Happy Camper!

Picture above: Spring comes to Amsterdam, a canal view—what else? Picture below: House boat—I called Susan; I want one!

Ah, lovely photos! "SUCKS STUPENDOUSLY" LOL!

I read that new houseboats are not available in Amsterdam but an existing boat with average interior is about $180,000 Euros. Since you are about "excellent interior" and Susan is clearly about "extraordinary interior," I would expect to pay more.

I'm with Judith....took me about 2 mins of laughing over 'Sucks Stupendously' to actually say thanks for the great pics. Is that term one that you use in specific corporate consulting Tom? I don't recall seeing that in Reimagine :)

The life of TP bugs me...oh well, maybe when I grow up I can be Tom.

Tom,

Having followed my passion for filmmaking ("I really get PAID to do this?!?!?!") I'll offer you the following:

Let me know the first time you plan to arrive at a water-side venue in your new houseboat to do a speaking engagement that I can afford to attend... and I'll bring my trusty television camera and put you together a killer custom video for your website (or for your own pleasure -- like there's REALLY any difference or "space" between the two ;-)

That, or you should at least commandeer a large yacht/small cruise ship and host an ocean-going thought/idea "Journey to Excellence" to remember (no doubt it would be that.)

You bring the boat. I'll bring the gear. Production work is on me. Seriously.

Scott,

I used to wonder if T.P. laughed all the way to the bank... having seen him in person more than once I'm beyond convinced that he has a helluva time when he gets started. But having been fortunate enough to experience the joy of loving what you do and doing what you love (AND getting the bills paid in the process) I respect Tom for still being genuine along the way. He has made a HUGE difference in a lot of companies, teams, and lives in general. I actually love it that the guy makes a nice living by making a difference that can't be measured in dollars alone (although it sometimes is (sadly) and the rewards for some of those folks he has affected have undoubtedly been HUGE.)

Rock on, Tom. (Yikes... slight boat pun totally unintentional.)

I assure the house boat thing is/was a passing fancy/fantasy with a duration measurable in nanoseconds. I love love love love anything and everything on the water!! Plus there's the fact that Spring has really sprung here just this week, and the green is the unique green, lasting about 2 or 3 weeks, that occurs when the leaves first come out. As to life on a canal during the six months of dreary winter, no thanks--I've got the 8 month Vermont winter to cope with, and that's enough.

Scott - I'm 56 and I NEVER want to grow up and I agree 100% Tom is a great role model :-)

Tom - I'm just about to take the dogs for a walk by the beautiful River Avon just 100 yards from our front door in balmy Warwickshire on a beautiful Spring evening – my favourite season. I agree with your sentiments about water ... there is just something intangible about it that gives me a real buzz ... PS - the dogs agree.

Brings out some of the "youth" in all of us, perhaps. "Us" including our four-legged friends. We have a 15 year old mixed-breed that most days acts like he can barely get around due to his arthritis. But when you put a leash on him and get him near the van, the tail starts wagging and he perks up considerably. Once we get him to the water, he experiences a healing of unimaginable proportions. Only problem: getting him BACK in the van. He's that smart. He knows when playtime is over and can "pout" with the best of them (four legged or two legged.)

Amsterdam is one of my favourite cities - I have a love affair with that place (indeed, I asked my wife to marry me there). If you're still in town, 2 restaurant recomendations Tom:
Pastini http://www.pastini.nl/ and Sluizer http://www.sluizer.nl/
Enjoy....

Dear Tom, thanks fot the great day in Breukelen, it was very inspiring and please stay angry! I am very curious how the Chinese will react to the geezers/women theory..please try your brilliant McDonalds view on women with them! I lived for 2 years in Tokyo and came home with ten years of unbielievable stories, so I am very sure you will have a great time in Shanghai anyhow. Next time around, please visit the flowerauction in Aalsmeer, it will inspire you even more! Thanks again and the best of health and success!!

Thanks for sharing! "Business at its best."
Dan G. - my neighbor cut 7 years off his 14 year old dog with a super nutrition diet & weekly massage. Trevor is now dining the same way - have fun TG in the Flora LM & its festival atmosphere! :>)

Thanks C Love - I genuinely appreciate that.

I'm told by folks who have run the London Marathon before, that if we hit the ‘wall’ at 23 miles the crowd metaphorically speaking ‘carry’ us the remaining 3 miles home .... 38,000 competitors - over one million spectators along the course in London ...carnival atmosphere .... And then Fish and Chips to follow!!! - life doesn’t get much better than this my friend :-)

My own pet love-it-when-I-find-it is an ergonomic desk and chair in the room. Usually desks are too high, chairs too low, chair arms get in the way, desk drawers wallop my knees, all from having been designed to "fit in" with the room scheme rather than work well.

PS houseboats = romantic but rheumatic.

"PS houseboats = romantic but rheumatic."

I lived on one 35 years ago in the SF Bay Area. It was in a locale with extreme tides. Hence there were also other pleasures at very low tide!

Now that statement leaves a lot to the imagination!

I miss Amsterdam! This post made me a bit jealous! I did try the living on the boat thing myself, but discovered I enjoyed things like furnaces! and showers I could stand up in! Safe travels...

Please note that when buying a boat in Amsterdam be sure that the price includes the mooring place, AND that the vendor is allowed to transfer the place to you regarding the regulations of the specific district. Otherwise you could find yourself with your boat behind a nice tugboat, on an involuntary trip to a nice quay in some industrial area, with the value of your boat decreasing inversely proportional to the distance between you and the nice canal spot where you bought your boat...

Anyway, I DID like your show at Nyenrode VERY MUCH! Have a good journey and stay in Shanghai and back home afterwards!

stewart brand of Whole Earth Catalog fame lives on a tugboat in Sausalito, probably not far from where tom once had his houseboat. see article from nytimes magazine: http://is.gd/tWZK

"stewart brand of Whole Earth Catalog fame lives on a tugboat in Sausalito, probably not far from where tom once had his houseboat."

I was about 50 yards from SB!

Whole Earth Catalog!!! What an incredible zeitgeist publication that was. I still get out my copy of The Last WEC from time to time and leaf through it for the sheer pleasure of its format, opinions, serial story and general common-sense positive-energy wackiness. Undiluted joy and nostalgia.

Posted by RobCH at April 23, 2009 3:24 AM

RobCH - You make me want to go to a great multiple level used bookstore here and leaf through some Whole Earth Catalogues! Beautifully crafted comment. Thanks. Also appreciated Gerjan's. Many smiles here.

Totally agree on all accounts. You give me those three . . . and the view to go with them and I am a happy camper. By the way, Tom what are you using as a traveling camera to get such terrific photographs. You should be submitting them to an online photography catalog. Might up your income for next year!
