100 Ways to Succeed #170:

Stop Kidding Yourself!
Do Fresh!

Years ago: I'd gotten home late from a long & harrowing trip. At breakfast the next morning, I declared to my ex-wife that I felt "fresh as a daisy"—no ulterior motive, I did! As I said it, I dropped my coffee cup on the floor.

Her (appropriate!) response: "Petal fell off."

Likewise, apparently brimming with energy, in days past, I'd arrive in London from San Francisco, go to my hotel and change, and get on with my day's work—certain, redux, that I was "fresh as a daisy."

Arriving at around 6 a.m. from a mere Boston-LondonHeathrow trip, these days I usually take the day off:

Nap.
Then wander around London.
Working dinner is a possibility.

Message:

Fresh matters!
A lot!!!!!!
(And not just in the OR or cockpit.)
(And age makes some difference—but, I believe, not a lot of difference.)

(I still feel "fresh as a daisy"—thanks, Mom Peters, for the Energizer Bunny genes. But now I'm "sage enough" to admit that I ain't!)

So:

Don't do delusion!
Do fresh!

An Energizer Bunny I must admit to being having also acquired such genes from my mom. But I always get my sleep, even if it means catching some ZZZ's mid-day after having worked into the early morning. It also depends on my schedule. At the bookstore today, I set my Blackberry for a 30 minute nap and I felt totally refreshed when I awoke. I wrote for five hours nonstop while listening to jams by Earth, Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder, and Al Green.

Prior to arriving at the bookstore, I had five hours of sleep, met a consulting client, and went to Home Depot with my construction crew to get materials to rehab a newly purchased house. This took hours. The nap made the difference in my energy level and ability to write; the music helped too! I have been trying to get to bed earlier nightly, not my usual in by 4 and up by 7. But I rarely have trouble sleeping, no matter what the day has brought. "He gives His beloved sleep."

Thanks for the encouragement.

As someone who is not equiped with Energiizer Bunny genes I have really learned the value of rest! Just got back from a conference in the US and I don't want to see anything resembling work!!!! I hate jet lag :-(

LOL! Glad you were here. I've gotta get there. Been many places in the world but never to England. I think it's safe to say that jet lag is no fun for anyone. But I guess it's a matter of how we cope with such. With TP's schedule it's simply amazing that he can even be coherent after jetting about such. Wow!

SPEAKING OF SUCCESS:
An uncompromising desire to excel through eloquent, adaptive and amplified EXCELLENCE deeds.

Most of the point are interesting but not applicable for me.

Tobias - Are you not on a natural clock like the rest of us? Part machine perhaps?

Reminds me of a section in What-If (my Best Book Ever) about how your freshness store cupboard is the essential basis of creative thought. If you spend your life stuck in a rut and never take time to look around, you will always see the same things and think the same way.
Maybe Ferris Buller was right all along!

I think "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" maaaayyyyyy have been a secretly written unauthorized bio of Tom Peters' youth. I actually thought of Tom the first time I watched that movie. Ironic.

If it wasn't, I'd be curious to know at what point the switch more or less flipped in Tom's mind that something was badly amiss in American business. He seems to indicate that it more or less happened during the work that resulted in "In Search of Excellence," but I'd like to hear more of his story on when and how it did.
