Author of Retail Superstars: Inside the 25 Best Independent Stores In America, new Cool Friend George Whalin points us to the most remarkable places to shop in this country. Each has its own fascinating story, which Whalin details in the book. In his interview with Erik, he also recounts a story about George Harrison, a stolen guitar, and a Federale in Guadalajara. George Whalin is the founder of Retail Management Consultants, which provides business-building services to retail companies and industry suppliers all across North America. He has worked with companies in every area of retailing from single-store merchants to leading national chains, as well as retail trade associations, franchise organizations, and some of the world's best-known consumer products manufacturers, distributors, and suppliers. You can see what Tom said about Whalin's book in a blog post titled "Guarantee!," or learn more at his Retailer Blog. We welcome George to our group of Cool Friends.

"... most remarkable places to shop." Who has money for shopping these dire days of doom, especially in our "beloved" UK?

Here in the precious UK all the football stadiums have been torn down for firewood. There are no more fish & chips - just chips & chips - on a wonderful day we get chips & gruel. Labor dropped the "u" to save on keystroking as they rightly disappear into the night like the vermin they have become. We still have the bright sun a few days a year to lift our spirits. :>)

'C Love' it seems has moved to be closer to me - his loving friend here in li’l ol’ England. Our UK standard of living will undoubtedly rise significantly with the arrival of this Iconic philanthropist from the left hand side of the pond with all that disposable income he has to spend. PS - Lock up your daughters :-) … Welcome to England C!

Trevor, the UK is starting to sound more and more like where I live here in Alabama. The "Promise Land." Well, they've been promising us electricity and indoor toilets for years now.

Thanks Trevor for having Sir Richard - Virgin fly in all the cod we can eat from Iceland. "In Cod We Trust" shall ring out again in our divine Kingdom. :>)

UK Love - As you know Sir Richard is one of my great business heroes. Bring on the cod - there will always be a 'plaice' for Richard at the top table of business :-)

George Whalin has written a great book. Every one of the 25 profiles is extremely informative and wothwhile. It's an essential read for every independent retailer.
