Here's a collection of items from news and blogs and friends that we'd like to pass on for the beginning of the new year.
Out of possibly zillions, here's a selection of lists and suggestions for how to survive and thrive in 2010:
• Twelve Resolutions on How to be a Mensch, by Bruna Martinuzzi
• Ten Things I Know for 2010, from Ian Sanders
• How to Take Advantage of Social Media in Your Email Marketing from American Express Open Forum
• Ten Practical Tips for Saving Money on Travel from the New York Times
Cool Friend Andrea Learned sent us this trend prediction for 2010: Sustainability Communication.
Lots of fun, this one came to us in the emails. Out of the box (not to say out of control) ideas for consulting at BBC.co.uk: Listen to Peter Day's interview with Neil Mullarkey on comedy and Peter Cook on rock 'n roll. Or use this link.
Also from the emails, a unique idea: Jingle-a-Day for a year.
And finally, "Hire My Friend" is a free application on Facebook that allows you to promote your job-seeker friends within your friend network by announcing their candidacy in your Live/News feed, and placing an information box about them on your profile. Or, become a fan of "Hire My Friend."
Before blogging became all the rage, Tom was posting book reviews and Observations (essentially early blog posts) to this site. You can find the archives below.

Ian Sanders #8: "8. GROW DIFFERENT. Business growth doesn’t have to be about adding more stores, adding more staff, growing bricks and mortar premises, getting a bigger warehouse. There are smarter routes to business growth."
Wise advice for business owners - but bad news for the unemployed :-(

Cathy,
Thanks for posting these links - lots of both gnarly discussion potential and great ideas!
Please keep it up.

Mike, agreed, not good news for the unemployed in that respect. But I guess it's not that prescriptive about taking on more staff or not taking on more staff. It's just for business owners, entrepreneurs - and indeed executives taking the leap to do their own thing - to remember that they can be more creative with expansion than traditional business convention. Of course continuing valuing people (and great service, talent and ideas) is at the heart of working smart but in tough times it's inevitable that organisations will stay lean.
Thanks for taking the time to check out the link and to Cathy for putting it up there....

Hi Cathy,
Thanks very much for posting this.
Very best

Thank you all for the appreciation. We implemented these link roundups because we (Shelley and I) miss tpwireservice.com. I only did it when Shelley wasn't available, but it was such fun to look at the news feeds in the morning to choose the most Tom-esque of the bunch. Especially good was that we were required to read the news as part of the job! Shelley was so well-informed when she was managing tpws, that she was a bit of a scary lady at the time. Anyway, long way round to this: If you ever see anything written by our world-wide community that deserves space here, please drop us a line at tom at tompeters.com.
